Peninsula Soccer League Structure of Play



Under 5 (U5) – Micro

Number of players on the field will be 3 vs. 3 NO goalkeepers. This provides plenty of action on the ball for all players and the chance for everyone on the field to get maximum amount of ball touches. No goalkeepers means that all the players on the field can dribble, pass, shoot, and participate which is consistent with the mentality of this age group.  Children that can run, jump, kick, and make more decisions will develop better and faster with more athleticism and coordination.  Open goals allows for more scoring and excitement along with success for players who are trying to develop shooting and finishing technique.  All players and spectators should celebrate goals with enthusiasm.  This will promote players who want to go to the goal developing a freedom to be creative.

Game length: 4 eight-minute quarters
Number of players: 3 vs. 3
Goal Size: Mini 4’ high by 6’ wide.
Field width: 15 – 20 yards
Field Length 25-30 yards
Field markings: None required.
Corner flags: Required
Corner arc: None Required
Center Line: Required with a 4-yard radius center circle.
Roster size: 5 -7 players

Referees are not required, but may be provided at the discretion of the league Coaches can control the game while making good decisions on restarts and keeping the game flowing. Players’ should kick a ball back into play rather than conduct a throw in. This avoids players from being struck with the ball in the head or face and it avoids constant re-throws because players at this age lack the coordination to throw properly. It also promotes a simple pass and kicking technique with no pressure. Goal kicks are taken from 1-3 yards inside goal line closest spot to where the ball traveled out, and all other restarts are normal to soccer. Substitutions can be made at any stoppage of play or on the fly at the discretion of the coach. Uniforms and safety equipment is standard for soccer; Non-uniform clothing may be worn based on whether condition as long as both teams can be distinguished. The game will be played in four equal quarters with a 1-minute break between quarters and a 3-5 minute half time. Teams will switch ends only at half time. All fouls conform to FIFA With the exception of No off sides, free kicks and restarts are all direct, the referee, coach, team parent should explain the foul to the player. Players must maintain a 4 - yard distance to all restarts.  No score or standing is kept, each team should be celebrated after each game and all parents and players should congratulate each other after the game.

Small-sided game advantages: 

•    More time spent with the coach / team parent.   
•    More success for all players
•    Player can play offense and defense
•    Good use of field space
•    Two matches can be played across a field
•    Players stay engaged in smaller spaces
•    More goals and faster attacking
 
Under 6 (U6) – Micro

Number of players on the field will be 4v4 and with goalkeepers, which helps with the development and transition to the U8 game of 8 vs. 8. This provides plenty of action on the ball for all players and the chance for everyone on the field to get maximum amount of ball touches. All the players on the field can dribble, pass, shoot, and participate which is consistent with the mentality of this age group.  Children that can run, jump, kick, and make more decisions will develop better and faster with more athleticism and coordination.  Larger goals allows for more scoring and excitement along with success for players who are trying to develop shooting and finishing technique.  All players and spectators should celebrate goals with enthusiasm.  This will promote players who want to go to the goal developing a freedom to be creative.

Under 8 (U8)

It provides the opportunity that all the players on the field can dribble, pass, shoot, and participate both offensively and defensively. Children that can run, jump, kick, and make more decisions will develop better and faster with more athleticism and coordination. Goalkeepers will allow players to develop specialized skills specific to this position while promoting advanced tactical development toward the full game of soccer. All players and spectators should celebrate goals with enthusiasm.  This will promote players who want to go to the goal and developing a freedom to be creative.

Number of players: Normally 8 v 8, or 6v6. 6v6 is standard for PSL Spring Soccer
Goal Size: Junior 7’ high and 21’ wide can be smaller.
Field width: 30 – 40 yards
Field length: 50 – 70 yards
Field markings: Normal field marking reduced in size. 6-yard Goal box, 14-yard penalty area,
8-yard penalty spot.
Corner flags: Required
Corner arc: Required 1-yard radius
Center Line: Required with 8-yard radius center circle.
Roster size: 10-12 players

Referees are required. Coaches may substitute at any time with the permission of the Referee, generally; prior to a throw-in, in your favor, prior to a goal kick by either team, after a goal by either team, at any stoppage of play with the referee’s permission. Throw in may be retaken once with minor coaching from the referee. All other restarts are normal to soccer with off sides being enforced more as the season progresses. Uniforms and safety equipment is standard for soccer. The game will be played in two equal halves with a 5-minute half time. Teams will switch ends only at half time. All fouls conform to FIFA with the exception the referee may explain the foul to the player. Players must maintain an 8 - yard distance to all restarts.  Each team should be celebrated after each game and all parents and players should congratulate each other after the game.

Under 12 (U12) – Under 19 (U19)

Number of players on the field will be 11 v 11 including goalkeepers. The full-sided game provides more tactical awareness to the ball, players, and field. Players will have a chance for to learn two or three positions. It provides the opportunity that all the players on the field can dribble, pass, shoot, and participate both offensively and defensively with proper training and technical tactical field and game awareness and understanding. Goalkeepers should have been developed prior to this age establishing specialized skills specific to this position while promoting advanced tactical development toward the full game of soccer and the leadership needed to play the goalkeeper position. A larger more focused attitude on performance and applying skills to the game along with winning and positioning, which will utilize the player most effectively for the team and individual ability. Remember these priorities: Your players, the opposing players, and the game. Players and spectators should celebrate goals with enthusiasm.  This will promote players who want to go to the goal developing a freedom to be creative.

•    Focus on development rather than winning, this will ultimately lead to winning!
•    A player who hears positive encouragement will tend to perform any function over and over!

Field length: 90 – 120 yards

Roster size: 13-18 players
