Director, Peninsula Soccer League

As I start to look ahead to my third year of involvement with Peninsula Soccer League, I am very excited about what’s in store.  After two years at the helm of the league I believe we have streamlined our operation to be more efficient and therefore more able to serve the kids and families of our community.  With the addition of an online registration system, we have attemted to make it easier for families to register with a click of a button. Additionally we look to streamline the flow of information using  our website as the center for all information.   After  a few days of inclement weather during PSL Fall 2010, we will be adding a web based field status mechanism for folks to check on closures during inclement weather.

The cornerstone of any great recreational soccer organization is the development of a volunteer coaching staff.   I am so lucky to have been blessed to be in a community like ours where there is no shortage of dedicated parent coaches.  The PSL coaching staff has shown a willingness to go above and beyond in the coaching of our teams, and without their selfless contributions we certainly wouldn’t be able to opearte as we do.  As I look forward I hope to continue to be a resource for our coaches and assist in the continued education and development of coaching in our league.

As I walked the sidelines this fall, it is clear to me that we have built a special culture within our league.  Parent spectators are by and large supporting without shouting instructions of coaching from the sideline.  I applaud our PSL parents for their ability to model appropriate behavior and show the restraint that is necesary to release your children to the team, the coach and the experience of playing soccer.  I believe strongly that parents must create a supportive and encouraging climate for kids in athletics, without being overbearing or over-involved.  I thank you, but more importantly, so will your kids many years from now when they are adults.

The reality is that we have a short time with our kids in organized athletics. As we look to create responsible and kind people, the significance of the athletic experience is profound.  When facilitated correctly athletics can have a positive impact on our children as they move forward through life.  My most pertinent goal as a teacher, coach, mentor and administrator is to ensure that we are creating a safe environment where kids have the freedom to take risks, fail, succeed, work hard, laugh, and learn to enjoy the game of soccer as a life long activity.   I believe that as a soccer community, PSL is a leader in creating a progressive grassroot soccer experience that will help children in ways that transcend the soccer field.

Thank you for your support of Peninsula Soccer League.

Yours in Soccer,

Ryan Carruth
